German Timber Construction Congress:

Optimism in the German wood industry despite construction challenges

The 5th German Timber Construction Congress (DHK) held in Berlin on June 11-12, 2024, highlighted the wood industry's positive outlook amidst the construction crisis. Despite ongoing regulatory hurdles, numerous examples of multi-storey constructions underscored the sector's resilience. The Main Association of the German Wood Industry (HDH), a key sponsor of the congress, emphasised these challenges.

Themed 'Building with Wood in Urban Areas', this year's DHK showcased the increasing popularity of timber construction, particularly in cities grappling with housing shortages and climate impacts. Speakers across technical, economic, and political domains illustrated this trend with various urban and rural projects.

Sustainable urban development
At the congress, experts stressed that wood's structural versatility makes it ideal for sustainable urban development, facilitating more living space within limited areas while significantly contributing to climate protection. Dr. Denny Ohnesorge, Managing Director of HDH, highlighted the growth potential of serial construction and renovation, essential for meeting modern consumer demands for quality, comfort, and environmental responsibility.

Government support and market integration
Parliamentary State Secretary Sören Bartol (SPD) commended timber construction's role in the Federal Ministry of Housing's sustainable building initiatives. He noted the sector's integration into serial and modular construction methods, crucial for rapid and eco-friendly development. Climate-conscious funding programmes are integral to these efforts, highlighting wood's favourable life cycle assessments.

Academic and industry perspectives
Prof. Heinrich Köster, President of the Technical University of Rosenheim and President of the Forum Holzbau, reflected on the congress as a pivotal platform for advancing sustainable building practices with wood. He highlighted the sector's resilience amidst challenging market conditions, particularly in multi-storey construction, underscoring its sustainable, energy-efficient, and quality-driven approaches.

The DHK, with its focus on serial and affordable housing solutions, continues to catalyse innovation in timber construction. Celebrating thirty years of influencing industry practices, the congress remains a cornerstone for advancing wood's role in sustainable building.
