Strong support for city-centre shops

French city centres still 'all that'

Despite recent crises like Covid-19 and economic challenges, French sentiment towards city centres remains robust. A notable 64% express attachment to city centres, marking a 3-point increase, with young people showing even stronger support at 75%. Moreover, 83% view shopping in city centres as a civic duty, underlining its societal importance. A significant 34% believe revitalising local shops should be the top priority for city centre renewal efforts.

These results have been summarised in the '9th Barometer of the City Centre and Shops', conducted by the CSA institute and Citiz Media with support from the National Agency for Territorial Cohesion, which sheds light on the enduring attachment of French citizens to city-centre shops. Presented by Julie Gaillot at the Palais du Luxembourg, this annual study tracks the evolution of city centres and assesses the impact of policies like the 'Action Cœur de Ville' programme.

The barometer highlights key attractions of city centres valued by the French, including proximity to services, cultural offerings, and entertainment venues. City centres are increasingly seen as places for leisure and social interaction, with 90% preferring café terraces. This shift reflects a desire for urban spaces focused on relaxation and community engagement.
