Bookcases recalled after death of 4 year old child

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for about 1,000 Hayden bookcases sold by Dania Furniture due to safety concerns involving tip-over and entrapment hazards. This action follows a tragic incident last August where an unanchored bookcase fell over, leading to the death of a 4-year-old child.

Dania Furniture has issued a safety advisory for owners of the Hayden bookcase, emphasising the importance of securely anchoring these units to walls if not already done so, and keeping them out of reach of children to prevent tip-over accidents. The company is offering a free in-home installation of a tip-over restraint kit to enhance safety measures. Alternatively, consumers affected by this advisory have the option to receive a refund from Dania.

The Hayden bookcase features a design with six storage cubbies, made from brown wood with three sliding white doors. It measures 35.5 inches wide, 16 inches deep, and stands 73 inches tall. Each unit is labelled with the product name and SKU number LB2225/A on the back. These bookcases were sold exclusively at Dania Furniture stores nationwide and online from November 2017 to February 2024, priced approximately at $370 each. They were manufactured in Italy.
