&Tradition dives into the story of designer Robin Day

&Tradition seeks to uncover the stories of figures who have left a lasting impression on the fabric of contemporary design. Narrated by design historian, Emanuele Quinz, the company delves into the landscape of 20th century design and the principles that guided it, a moment in history that heralded the arrival of new creative pursuits and a shift in the metric of design. Presented in parts, the documentary series reveals how the central protagonists epitomise a design ethos that has lost none of its relevance – highlighting works that speak of technical innovation, simplicity of form, natural materials, and deeply rooted principles.

One of the figures covered in the series is Robin Day. Guided by a pragmatic, creative ethos and social conscience, Robin Day found acclaim after winning first place in the storage section of the Museum of Modern Art's Low-Cost Furniture Competition in New York in 1948.

His designs were not only considered to achieve an equilibrium between comfort and utility, but expressed an optimistic approach towards the future of design and the modalities that would shape it. A notable figure in post-war Britain whose designs continue to resonate with contemporary sensibilities, Day sought to introduce forms that would complement and enrich the lives of those around them. Through conversation with Paula Day, daughter of Robin Day, we uncover the designer's desire to solve functional problems with simple yet intuitive solutions.
