French bedding industry shows notable resilience, says research by IPEA

The Institute for Prospective and Furniture Studies (IPEA) highlighted in its latest Economic Indicator that despite variations among different players within channels, no sector, apart from bedding specialists, managed to distinguish itself positively. Commercial strategies varied widely across brands within each channel, influencing overall performance.

In May, the domestic furniture market continued its downward trend for the third consecutive month, with a decline of -6.9% compared to the same period last year. This moderation in decline, while an improvement from March and April's figures of -8% and -9% respectively, still reflects ongoing challenges within the industry.

Regarding product categories, all segments experienced decreased sales, with bedding showing the least decline, partly cushioned by its specialized market dynamics. Conversely, sectors like bathroom and garden furniture struggled, influenced in part by adverse weather conditions.

The overarching trend of declining furniture sales reflects broader economic conditions and consumer behaviour patterns, suggesting a cautious outlook for the remainder of the year unless significant economic factors change.
