CBS reports sharp rise in inflation in the Netherlands

Consumer goods and services were 3.2 percent more expensive in June than a year earlier, reports CBS. In May, inflation was 2.7 per cent. Inflation is measured each month as the change in the consumer price index (CPI) compared to the same month in the previous year. The June inflation figure is the same as in the quick estimate published on 2 July.

Inflation rises due to tobacco and clothing
The price trend of tobacco boosted inflation. In June, tobacco was 30.9 per cent more expensive than last year; in May, the increase was 22.0 per cent. From 1 April 2024, the excise duty on tobacco was increased and this caused a rise in prices. An excise duty hike affects selling prices with some delay, as tobacco stocks are still sold with old excise duty rates in the first few months after the excise duty hike. Clothing price developments also had an upward effect on inflation. Clothing was 1.3 per cent more expensive in June than a year earlier; in May, prices were 3.9 per cent lower than last year.

Eurozone inflation 2.5 percent
CBS publishes two different figures for inflation. One based on the consumer price index (CPI) and one based on the European harmonised consumer price index (HICP). Consumer goods and services in the Netherlands were 3.4 per cent more expensive in June than in the same month last year, according to the HICP. In May, inflation was 2.7 per cent, according to the HICP. Eurozone inflation fell to 2.5 per cent in June from 2.6 per cent in May.
