Germany's Schüco reports a challenging year

In the challenging financial year of 2023, Schüco, based in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, faced significant setbacks despite strategic investments and global operations.

The company reported total sales of EUR 2.11 billion, marking a 7.4% decline compared to the previous year. Adjusting for currency effects, this decline moderated to 4.7%.

Schüco's financial stability was maintained, supported by completed construction projects such as the EUR 52.6 million expansion of its Bielefeld headquarters and the acquisition of a 100,000 square meter site for Gewerbepark Flugplatz Gütersloh GmbH.

The company employed an average of 6,750 people globally throughout the year, emphasizing its commitment to operational continuity despite economic challenges.

In its metal construction division, which includes aluminium and steel products, Schüco faced a 2.7% decrease in global sales to EUR 1.77 billion. This decline was attributed to supply chain disruptions, surging raw material costs, geopolitical tensions such as the Ukraine war, and escalating energy prices and inflation rates. Sales in Europe, a key market, dropped by 8.8% to EUR 649 million, while markets outside Europe, particularly in India, China, South America, and Saudi Arabia, showed positive growth.

The Plastics division also encountered difficulties, with sales declining by 17.9% globally to EUR 345 million. This downturn was notably pronounced in Germany, where sales plummeted by 18.6%, reflecting a deteriorating order situation in residential construction. Conversely, sales in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Turkey outperformed the previous year, indicating regional market variability.
