'Sleeping in Germany' study reveals remarkably low turnover rate in bed market

Titze Consulting conducted a recent market study on 'Sleeping in Germany', revealing several key findings. The market for beds, mattresses, and bed frames is increasingly driven by replacement rather than new construction in the coming years. Since 2020, the number of beds in Germany has risen by 2.6 million to a total of 103.5 million. However, only 2.0 to 2.3 million beds are sold annually, indicating a remarkably low turnover rate, described by the study as 'alarmingly low'.

The situation is even more concerning for mattresses, with an annual sale of 7.5 million mattresses against a current stock of 136 million in Germany. On average, mattresses are replaced approximately every 18 years, posing hygiene challenges.

The study highlights a significant underestimation in the retail sector regarding the demand for comfort beds and care beds for older adults who wish to remain in their homes longer. The market for care beds alone is projected to grow by over 43% by 2030.

Despite suboptimal turnover rates, the market for beds, mattresses, and bed frames remains lucrative, reaching a combined trade volume of €3,625 million in 2023. This represents a slight decrease of approximately 4.5% from 2022 but remains higher than the years between 2018 and 2021.

The study also notes an increasing number of competitors in the German market, now totalling 528 companies, with a notable rise in foreign providers due to growing import shares.
