25-year legacy ends as popular Hamburg furniture store closes its doors

One of Hamburg's iconic furniture stores is shutting down its operations immediately, marking the end of a 25-year legacy. The closure follows a failed attempt to save the store, with a potential investor pulling out at the last minute. As a result, the business will enter insolvency proceedings in mid-August, affecting 40 employees who will receive termination notices.

The Hamburg store is Die Wäscherei, founded by the visionary Michael Eck, who passed away in April. It was known for its eclectic furniture trends, provocative events, and vibrant atmosphere.

In a heartfelt statement on their website, the store expressed deep sadness over the closure, thanking their loyal customers and dedicated team:

'After more than 25 years of furniture trends, absurdities, parties and many, many great encounters, the Hamburg store unfortunately has to close. It breaks our hearts...

After hoping for a long time, a possible investor withdrew his offer at the last minute. The insolvency proceedings will be opened in mid-August, the Die Wäscherei is closed with immediate effect. The warehouse sale begins in mid-September.

Die Wäscherei was a showcase for extraordinary furniture trends, a place for inspiration, a party organiser with a love of provocation, a hodgepodge for many, many weird birds, loud, non-conformist, unique, with an equally unique team and the best regular customers we could imagine. Even if the word cannot express all our feelings, we have no other: THANK YOU!!

But at some point, even the most beautiful dream comes to an end and has to make room for something new. And as much as our hearts bleed, perhaps such a crashing ending fits the Die Wäscherei better than a dive into mediocrity.'
