Cambridge flooring company fined $70,000 for carbon monoxide poisoning incident

A Cambridge flooring company has been fined $70,000 in connection with a 2023 incident involving a worker's prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide. The incident occurred on January 4, 2023, at a construction site in London, where the company had been contracted to polish concrete floors for a new warehouse.

A worker of BNE Concrete Floors & Coatings Inc., operating a propane-powered polishing machine, became seriously ill after using the machine in a poorly ventilated area, eventually losing consciousness due to carbon monoxide exposure.

The company pleaded guilty in court and was fined $65,000 for failing to ensure adequate ventilation and $5,000 for not notifying an inspector immediately.

Additionally, a 25% victim fine surcharge was imposed under the Provincial Offences Act. BNE was also found to have delayed informing the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development about the incident, failing to preserve the scene and immediately report the critical injury, which contributed to the severity of the penalties.
