'World's largest stadium' to be built in Morocco for FIFA World Cup

Morocco is set to construct the world's largest stadium, named Hassan II, near Casablanca to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

This colossal project will feature a seating capacity of 115,000, surpassing North Korea's May 1 Stadium by 1,000 seats. The stadium will cost an estimated €500 million and is expected to be completed by December 2029. The design, led by the Oualalou + Choi agency in collaboration with British firm Populous, will reflect local cultural elements, particularly resembling large traditional tents.

The project management was appointed in March 2024, with Oualalou + Choi outcompeting prominent international firms like Herzog & de Meuron, Zaha Hadid, and Foster + Partners. While the National Agency for Public Facilities has not yet opened the tender for construction, major French companies Vinci and Bouygues are rumoured to be in the running.

The stadium will anchor a massive 100-hectare development, including training grounds, hotels, shopping centres, a conference and exhibition centre, a playground, an athletics stadium, a gym, a swimming pool, and extensive road infrastructure. Additionally, a new terminal at Mohammed V Airport is planned, with construction beginning in September 2024.
