From loss to profit - this Swedish retailer has defied the odds

A Swedish furniture e-commerce retailer faced a challenging year in 2023, experiencing its first-ever financial loss in 14 years. The setback, a SEK 2.5 million increase in costs due to mishandling by their previous marketing agency, impacted their bottom line significantly.

However, the company AZ Design has since turned the situation around, achieving a profit of approximately SEK 1.7 million in the latest financial year, which ended on June 30.

The founder of AZ Design, Andreas Zwahlen, highlights in an article in ehandel that while the company continues to cater to both B2B and B2C markets, with 70% of sales coming from corporate clients and 30% from private individuals, large orders often still occur offline.

AZ Design's largest orders, typically around SEK 1 million, often involve leasing and are not yet fully automated online. The company aims to accelerate the development of its B2B online capabilities to better accommodate customer demands and payment solutions.

Looking ahead, AZ Design plans to significantly expand its product range from 10,000 to over 20,000 items. This 120% increase in their e-commerce offering is driven by customer demand for greater variety and quicker delivery.
