Little Greene introduces 'Double Drenching'

The way colour is used in the home has changed radically. In recent years, Little Greene has seen the design trend 'Colour Drenching' transform spaces.

For some, 'Colour Drenching' represents a big step forward away from the traditional use of colour in a design. This method of 'drenching', or immersion, in which a room is entirely enveloped in a single colour - from walls and ceilings to woodwork and skirting boards - has proven to greatly increase confidence in using colour in the home. It brings new opportunities to experiment with colour in interiors.

'Double Drenching' is Little Greene's term for dramatically transforming a space by applying two or more related colours to all surfaces for even more stunning results. This new approach offers the opportunity to combine colours not normally used together in a colour scheme. Traditionally, tonal variations of just one colour are used to create a harmonious look, for example by applying three strengths of a neutral shade to the wall, woodwork and ceiling. In 'Double Drenching', the colour varies in hue rather than strength; this involves combining colours from the same colour family that are similar in intensity but have different undertones. For example, greens at different ends of the colour spectrum, such as a bluish green used next to a yellowish green on different surfaces within a room.

By using colours close to or next to each other on the Little Greene Colours of England colour chart (rather than tonal shades above or below), we see combinations such as 'Hopper' versus 'Citrine', 'Mid Azure Green' next to 'Deep Space Blue' and 'Tivoli' with 'Blue Verditer' and 'Woad'.

"It is always fascinating to see how colour confidence and use of colour changes over time. In recent years, awareness of the impact of colour on the atmosphere of a space has grown exponentially. Since the introduction of the 'Colour Drenching' approach in 2021, we have seen clients move away from traditional colour schemes and embrace deep and mid-tones from floor to ceiling and everything in between, creating truly engaging, inviting spaces. 'Double Drenching' is an extension of this colour confidence, turning the concept into a highly creative, high-quality and nuanced approach to decoration," said Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director of Little Greene.
