Young people in France remain optimistic in spite of inflation

OpinionWay and Bonial recently released their 11th barometer entitled, 'From Purchasing Power to the Desire to Purchase', based on a survey of the French population aged 18 and over.

Although the French state of mind remains predominantly negative (76%), this is nevertheless one of the lowest scores measured since the launch of this barometer in March 2022, while the proportion of respondents who report a positive state of mind remains stable (36%) and is at its highest level since the start of the barometer.

Younger people report a surge in optimism: 48% of people under 35 cite at least one positive element, an increase of 16 points compared to the last wave. Conversely, the positive state of mind is decreasing among the oldest (34% of people aged 50 and over, -4 points). The so-called higher socio-professional categories continue to be more positive (40%), with an 8-point difference compared to the more modest categories (32%).

Despite the negative sentiments that continue to dominate, this wave of the barometer
confirms that the pressure of inflation is easing.

All the items tested are on the rise and have reached their highest level since the launch of the barometer: compared to June 2024, more French people consider themselves capable of financing their expenses until the end of the month (72%, +3 points), of living decently (69%, +5 points), of going on vacation (58%, +4 points), of pleasing their loved ones (57%, +2 points) or of saving (48%, +4 points).

In this context, 3 out of 4 French people are preparing to adjust their purchasing behaviour to make savings in the coming weeks (74%, +5 points).

The gap is widening again between the youngest and the oldest: 80% of people under 50 plan to change their purchasing behavior in the coming weeks (+8 points) compared to 68% of consumers aged 50 and over (+3 points).

91% of respondents believe that treating themselves with purchases costs more today, an increase of 3 points. The share of French people who manage to treat themselves at least from time to time is down (68%, -3 points) after an exceptional increase last June.

Young people under 35 are increasingly likely to say they indulge themselves at least from time to time (80%, +7 points) while their elders aged 50 and over are more likely to restrict themselves (64%, -6 points).
