Bed industry retailers declare war on daily magazines

There is unrest in the Flemish retail world due to recent events surrounding the sale of sleep comfort products by Mediahuis. Pascal Mannekens, owner of Bedking - Ergopolis, has expressed concern via a LinkedIn post about what he describes as deceptive practices by Ads&Data, a partner of Mediahuis.

As it turns out, several retailers have filed complaints. The criticism mainly focuses on Mediahuis' online and print ads, which promise big discounts on box springs and mattresses, sometimes up to -71%. The advertising claims have been questioned by retailers, who claim that the original prices are never shown and that the advertised discounts are misleading. This has led to accusations of unfair competition, especially as Mediahuis, traditionally seen as a media company, now seems to operate as a retailer without physical shops.

In response to these developments, the Interieur Unie, a trade association for interior design retailers, has called on its members to take action. Back in May, the union responded by calling in a bailiff and now it is encouraging its members to file complaints. In addition, some members are considering completely freezing their advertising budgets for 2025 as a sign of protest. The situation has led to questions about Media House's role in the retail market.

With extensive advertising campaigns in its own newspapers such as Het Nieuwsblad and De Standaard, the union questions whether Mediahuis is overstepping the boundaries of fair competition. This battle in Flemish retail land is far from over. With complaints being filed and a call for action, it seems the industry is bracing itself for a protracted conflict over the ethics of advertising and the definition of retail in the digital age. Retailers and consumers are now watching to see how this situation will develop.

Interieur Unie is a Belgian union that represents the sector-specific interests of all home furnishing retailers. Besides being a voice for the sector to its stakeholders (manufacturers, politics, press, consumers), it is also a centre of expertise that federates, informs, facilitates and inspires its members.

Mediahuis is the publisher of the Flemish newspapers De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen, De Gentenaar, Het Belang van Limburg and Metro and the Dutch newspapers De Limburger, NRC Handelsblad, De Telegraaf, Metro and the daily newspapers of Holland Media Combinatie.
