Danish managers in legal hotseat for fraud and bribery

A former head of office and two suppliers to the Danish Defence Property Agency have been convicted of fraud and bribery by the Western High Court, overturning an earlier district court acquittal.

The ex-office manager, who received a six-month suspended sentence, was found guilty of accepting bribes, including a kitchen and various household items, for his holiday home. One supplier, a kitchen company stakeholder, received a four-month suspended sentence for bribery involving the kitchen and other private items.

The second supplier, a painter, was convicted of attempted fraud, bribery, and supplying two robotic lawnmowers for personal use, resulting in a 60-day suspended sentence and a fine.

The case revealed that public employees exploited their positions for personal gain. The High Court emphasised the severity of the crimes. Although the sentences were lighter than requested by the prosecution, the court underscored the importance of accountability for public officials. The Danish Defence Property Agency has since implemented tighter controls on procurement processes to prevent similar incidents.
