Mattress giant Emma to cease operations in Sweden

German mattress giant Emma - The Sleep Company is exiting the Swedish market due to restructuring challenges in Europe. Despite achieving nearly SEK 11 billion in turnover in 2023 and a 13% growth, the company has struggled with operational issues linked to its new systems, exacerbated by a global recession affecting e-commerce and home goods.

Emma announced that, as of September 1, it will no longer operate in Sweden and will lay off about 200 employees worldwide, which constitutes roughly 18% of its workforce. The company's planned expansion and product diversification were hindered by these operational difficulties and adverse market conditions.

The decision to pull out of Sweden follows a series of restructuring efforts across Europe, reflecting the broader volatility in the global economy and its impact on the company's business operations.

An official announcement on the company's website reads, 'Emma is currently undergoing a restructuring. As a result of this, Emma will no longer be active on the Swedish market as of September 1. We want to express our gratitude to all our valued customers for entrusting us with the journey of awakening their best sides.'
