At the London Design Festival 2024, British designer Tom Dixon unveiled his latest sofa innovations, with the quirky names 'Plump' and 'Fat'. These new designs mark a departure from traditional sofa concepts, reflecting the evolving needs of modern living spaces.
Dixon explains that contemporary living environments have undergone a significant transformation, driven by social media, wireless technology, and the pandemic. Traditional focal points like fireplaces and televisions have given way to more flexible and deconstructed communal spaces. In response, Dixon's designs aim to reposition sofas as central, multifunctional elements in these evolving settings.

The 'Plump' sofa is inspired by the classic Chesterfield design but with a modern twist. It features generous curves and a substantial frame, creating a standout piece that remains understated. Unlike modular designs, Plump can be configured as an L-shape chaise, or in 2.5- or 3-seater arrangements. Dixon sought to modernize the Chesterfield's proportions while focusing on simplicity with a semi-circular profile and straight lines, stripping away ornate details to enhance the sofa's essential qualities.
In contrast, the 'Fat' sofa is a fully modular system designed for versatility. Its curved form and steel leg bases offer a striking contrast to the upholstered surfaces, making it suitable for various settings, including homes, offices, hotels, and public spaces. Fat's design allows it to function as a 'living island', positioned centrally to showcase its form and adaptability.
