Woman uses stone worth fortune as doorstop for years

A Romanian woman used a stone, which she found along a riverbed, as a doorstop for years without knowing that it was the largest lump of amber ever. The stone, weighing about 3.3 kg, was only noticed by an heir after her death in 1991. After the stone was sold to the Romanian state, expert research revealed that the nugget is between 38 and 70 million years old and has an estimated value of 1 million euros.

The lump of amber, now recognised as the largest intact in the world and listed in the Guinness Book of Records, has been on display at the Buzau Provincial Museum in Romania since 2022. Amber is fossil resin that takes millions of years to form under specific conditions. Romania, especially the region around the village of Colti, is known for finding amber since the 1920s.
