Interview with Managing Director in the Benelux Mark van Betten:

Swedish brand Tenzo celebrates 90 years this month

Tenzo, a Swedish furniture manufacturer with deep roots in the Gnosjö region, is celebrating its 90th anniversary this month. Founded in 1934 by David Johansson, the company has evolved from a small wood furniture specialist in Smålandsstenar to exporting 95% of its production to major retailers across Europe. During our conversation with Mark van Betten, Tenzo's Managing Director for the Benelux market, he shared insights into the company's history and exciting plans for the future.

In the early days when Tenzo was known as Träspecialen Möbel AB. Originally focused on wooden furniture, the company rebranded in 2007 as Tenzo AB, symbolising its shift to modern furniture production with a particular expertise in colours and enamels. Despite its growth, Tenzo has remained true to its roots, with its factory still located in Smålandsstenar. 'It's a proud moment for us, reaching 90 years. It's been a journey, and we've remained in the same village where it all began,' says Mark.

As part of the milestone, Tenzo has released a special video that takes a nostalgic look at the company's history:

The Nice Collection
To mark this significant anniversary, Tenzo has also introduced its latest product line—the Nice Collection, which captures the essence of Scandinavian mid-century design. The Nice Collection embodies the genuine Scandinavian aesthetic of the mid-century design era. Featuring smooth, clean lines, an oak surface, and minimalist fronts without handles, the collection offers high-quality materials and thoughtful craftsmanship. In addition, the collection is delivered fully assembled, saving customers time and stress.

Plans after the summer
Like many companies, Tenzo has felt the impact of the slower market following the summer months. 'The market at the moment is fairly slow after summer, with people reluctant to take on too much stock.' Despite this, Tenzo is optimistic about the upcoming season as the industry picks up again. Tenzo has chosen to focus its efforts on the 2025 Cologne exhibition, forgoing its usual participation in Brussels. The decision is strategic, as van Betten explained, 'Cologne is more focused on Western Europe, while Brussels is more centered around the Benelux region. We believe Cologne will better serve us.' With 90 years behind them and with new collections on the horizon, the future looks bright for the Swedish brand.
