Warmer weather boost UK high street sales in September

Homeware sales on the UK high street saw a significant boost in September, marking the category's sixteenth positive result of 2024. According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 14.45% for the week ending September 15, 2024.

Specifically, homeware LFL sales increased by 7.74% this week, rebounding from a negative base of -4.46% for the same week last year. In-store sales of homewares rose by 10.42%.

Overall, in-store LFL sales saw a growth of 4.54%, compared to a base of -1.51% last year, while total non-store LFL sales soared by 26.71%, recovering from a base of -2.64% in the prior year.

BDO noted that retail sales performed well in both physical stores and online, with homewares showing strong results in-store, likely driven by promotional activities. The weather during this week shifted from chilly and blustery to warmer and sunnier conditions, contrasting with the same week last year, which also began with cool, overcast skies.

Overall footfall increased by 0.2% compared to the previous year, with retail parks seeing the best improvement at 3.9%, followed by shopping centres at 1.4%. However, high street footfall experienced a decline of 2.2%.
