Designed in 1954, the Bagdad Lamp embodies the quintessential characteristics of Mathieu Matégot's approach to lighting design: playful expression, signature material, and space-age aesthetic. Now, 70 years later, Gubi has reimagined the iconic lamp as a new portable version that brings the Hungarian designer's offbeat style and technical brilliance to both indoor and outdoor settings.
Move the glow around
Inspired by Middle Eastern lanterns, the Bagdad Portable Lamp is a scaled-down version of the 1954 original, making it a beautifully portable option. Made with Matégot's signature Rigitulle technique, the smaller 'tail' doubles as a handle, allowing it to be easily moved and spread its warm glow wherever needed.
Designed by Mathieu Matégot
Born in Hungary, Mathieu Matégot was a self-taught designer who discovered the potential of metal during his time as a prisoner of war. He developed Rigitulle, a technique combining metal tubing with perforated sheets, allowing his designs to achieve a unique transparency and weightlessness. This innovation became the signature of his modern, timeless furniture and home accessories.
