Interview with Peder Hemphrey Smith, CSO of Bergs Potter

'The US is a dynamic market, moving at a fast pace with a high demand for swift service'

For today's interview, we have the pleasure of speaking with Peder Hemphrey Smith, Chief Sales Officer at Bergs Potter. For over 80 years, Bergs Potter has dedicated itself to creating timeless, handcrafted ceramic pieces that foster harmony between people and plants. In our conversation, Peder will take us through the rich history of the brand—from its origins in a small Copenhagen ceramics shop opened during WWII, to becoming a global name, soon to present its products at High Point Market.

Can you tell me more about the history of Bergs Potter and how it was founded?
'Bergs Potter's story began in 1942, during one of the darkest periods of WWII when a young Victor Berg inherited a small ceramics shop in the Nørrebro neighbourhood of Copenhagen. With a dream of bringing more life and colour to his war-weary fellow Copenhageners, Victor decided to introduce plants to his shop.

Over the years, Bergs Potter evolved from this small, cherished shop into a family legacy. Victor's children, Steffen and Sysser, continued their father's passion for plants and pottery, searching across Europe for historic designs and skilled artisans. Their travels eventually led them to Tuscany, where they discovered master potters who shared their commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Here, Bergs Potter found its roots in clay, partnering with these artisans to create timeless designs made to last for generations.

Today, the legacy of Bergs Potter is carried forward by Martin and Frits, two childhood friends connected to the third generation of the Berg family. They honour this heritage with the same respect for tradition and dedication to quality that Victor first envisioned. Together, they work closely with skilled artisans to produce durable, timeless pots and plant accessories.'

In what markets is the brand most active?
'Our roots are in Scandinavia, but our branches have extended far and wide. Currently, the US is one of our most active markets, where we work closely with two dedicated sales managers and a committed agency team. Beyond the US, we're deeply embedded in Denmark, Sweden, and the UK, where we have a presence through our own sales managers. Our customers appreciate the timeless quality and handcrafted beauty our pots bring to any setting, indoor or outdoor.'

How is the market right now, especially in the US? Is it different from Europe?
'The US market is flourishing for us, though we're still considered small in comparison to the larger landscape. It's a dynamic market, moving at a fast pace with a high demand for swift service. Most significant is the expectations of a quick turnaround on all aspects of business. However, in both US and our 'home' regions, we find that people are increasingly looking to connect with nature through the beauty of handmade pieces.'

You'll soon be at High Point Market. What are your expectations for the fair?
'High Point Market is a relatively new terrain for us, as it primarily caters to contract partners, a sector we're still exploring and developing. While our expectations are modest, it offers us a unique opportunity to introduce Bergs Potter to a new audience and better understand this market. In contrast, we have a more established presence at Shoppe Object in New York, where our brand resonates well with visitors looking for high-quality, handcrafted designs.'

What will you be showing there?
'We'll be showcasing around 70% of our range, with a particular focus on interior pieces and our latest news (Belle, Gaia, and Atlas). This time of year, we aim to bring forward items that resonate with the cosy, indoor moments that define the colder months — a perfect time to invite nature inside and let it thrive. The Christmas and gifting season is also significant for us, as our collection offers wonderful gift options, from host gifts to beautiful pots that can be used for holiday decorations and festive plant displays.'

What are the future plans for the company?
'Our vision for Bergs Potter is to grow organically, with roots that reach deep and branches that extend far. We aim to become a recognised name not only for our signature pots, but also for a wider range of items—like vases and other pieces that bring the beauty of nature into both indoor and outdoor spaces. Our mission remains steadfast: to craft premium products for plants and people to thrive in harmony. Timeless designs crafted with love, the traditional way. All made to last for generations.'

Lastly, is there anything else you would like to share?
'Embrace the beauty of green spaces—surround yourself with more plants. It's often said that contact with nature can soothe the senses, reduce stress, and restore balance. At Bergs Potter, we believe that living with plants enriches our lives, helping us to thrive. For those times when we can't be outdoors, bringing plants inside offers a wonderful way to reconnect with nature. But for plants to help us thrive, they need the right conditions to thrive as well—so our best advice is to start with a high-quality pot that allows their roots to breathe, thereby giving nature the best conditions to thrive in your home.'

Meet Bergs Potter at High Point Market, 26th to 30th October 2024: Floor 3, Booth 1325.
