Designed by rising starchitect Nieto Sobejano in the course of an architectural competition initiated by the city of Munich, the Hotel Koenigshof—part of Marriott International's Luxury Collection—captures the timeless sophistication and cosmopolitan attitude of Munich with a fresh, contemporary design that beautifully embodies the city's history and culture.
'The idea was not only to open another luxury hotel in Munich, but also to convey the Munich lifestyle alongside an international free spirit,' explains Michael Wagner, COO of MHP Hotel AG. 'For us, this means the hotel doesn't just welcome overnight guests but, equally, acts as a popular spot for Munich residents. To achieve this, we not only created a fantastic rooftop bar with a view over the city, but also developed a unique gastronomy concept for Munich.'
Stachus serenity
Embracing a concept of 'serenity', Nieto Sobejano Architects and Landau + Kindelbacher pay tribute to the building's historical heritage while reinterpreting luxury in a modern fashion. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into a stunning, spacious atrium. Slatted volumes and large, gold-colored walls open up to historic Stachus, otherwise known as Karlsplatz, providing connection between the interior and exterior of the hotel, give it the feel of a luxurious urban sanctuary.
Throughout the interiors, art plays a key role. The Koenigshof's aim is seamlessly to combine Bavaria's rich tradition of collecting with the city's continuing passion for fine art. The collection on display represents internationally-renowned artists such as Joseph Beuys, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and David John Flynn, among many others, and complements the hotel's architecture and interior design.
Rooms and suites: Oases of calm amid the pulse of the city
The design of the 106 rooms, carefully curated by Munich-based studio Landau + Kindelbacher, conveys a feeling of privacy and exclusivity. Warm contrasts meet a sophisticated blend of modern furniture, curated works of art and elegant textiles. Each room radiates the warm, cosmopolitan personality so characteristic of the Munich way of life. A personal welcome card with illustrations by Munich designer Alexandra von Frankenberg, a fragrance created especially for the Koenigshof, and exclusive Koenigshof tea further ensure this.
'Munich is one of Europe's most dynamic and historic cities, making it the ideal location for our first German address of The Luxury Collection Hotel, a brand known for celebrating authenticity and local hotel experiences,' says Helen Leighton, Vice President, Luxury Brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International.
Bathrooms: A refined interplay with Axor
A minimalist design comprising simple, rectilinear forms and timeless stone surfaces creates a sense of tranquility and balance in each of the Koenighof's bathrooms. To complement this atmosphere, the interior designers opted for a tasteful selection of Axor products: a one-lever Axor One faucet at the washbasin and an Axor One thermostat module and Axor Starck 1jet hand shower at the bath. Wall-mounted and finished in Brushed Black Chrome, this arrangement projects a sense of composed elegance while underlining the subtle interplay between the archetypal form of Axor Starck and the elemental refinement of Axor One.
New culinary horizons
The Koenigshof offers a unique culinary food-and-beverage concept that provides guests maximum flexibility while leaving nothing to be desired. Guests can enjoy breakfast in the restaurant on the 9th floor, with its panoramic views, or in the bar, which serves local Bavarian dishes among other specialties. This innovative concept continues in The Green and The Gold on the 3rd floor: The Koenigshof's day bar and lounge offer a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city with specially-created delicacies such as Koenigshof tea, the Koenigshof Bellini and a teatime highlight, the Koenigshof cake, an homage to the world-famous Bavarian Prince Regent cake.
The later in the evening, the more colorful things get: Rooftop Latin-American restaurant Greta Oto amazes and delights under the direction of renowned Peruvian chef Michael Cánepa. Exceptional South American cocktails can be enjoyed in the adjoining bar, while the roof terrace offers a unique view over Munich.
Truly fit for a king
Undoubtedly the Koenigshof's crown jewel, a 250 sqm presidential suite offers the ultimate in luxury. Equipped with a private sauna, its own pool on the second level and a fabulous view over the city, the suite can confidently lay claim to the title of Munich's largest hotel accommodation. In addition to the private pool and sauna, there's a private SPA that offers an experience shower with high-quality SPA products and a private SPA lounge that, supported by a selected room service menu, creates moments of total relaxation.
