Princess Royal visits UK bedding retailer Harrison Spinks

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal received an exclusive behind-the-scenes look yesterday, October 30, at how Harrison Spinks' luxury British-made beds transition from farm to factory.

The royal visit to British bedmaker Harrison Spinks took place at their farm in Bolton Percy, York, and their manufacturing facility in Leeds. The visit celebrated the family-run business's achievements in sustainability and innovation, culminating in the presentation of a prestigious King's Award for Sustainable Development.

The day began at the bedmaker's Yorkshire farm, where The Princess Royal met the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Mrs. Jo Ropner, and the Harrison Spinks team, including Chairman Simon Spinks. Her Royal Highness learned about the company's sustainable farming practices, which feature award-winning Wensleydale sheep and the use of hemp and flax for luxury mattress fillings.

During the visit, the company showcased its environmentally friendly processes, including the use of homegrown hemp and responsibly sourced natural materials such as traceable British wool. They also highlighted their innovative ethical manufacturing practices and commitment to protecting the local environment and biodiversity.

Following the farm visit, The Princess Royal toured the Leeds manufacturing site with the Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr. Ed Anderson CBE. They witnessed the bespoke craftsmanship behind Harrison Spinks' luxury beds and mattresses, including a live demonstration of traditional hand side stitching, tape edging, and tufting techniques that the business has championed for 180 years.

Simon Spinks expressed pride in the visit, states, 'We are deeply honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness and thank her for taking the time to learn about our sustainable practices and meet our hard-working team. This King's Award reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation at every stage of production. As a family business, we pride ourselves on leading the industry toward a more responsible future and making a positive impact on our local communities and the environment.'

This recognition follows Harrison Spinks being named Bed Manufacturer of the Year at the 2024 National Bed Federation Awards, commending their dedication to sustainability and environmental achievements.
