An exclusive interview with Lisa Staprans about her new book 'The Soul of Design'

'I believe that intentional spaces don't just change our surroundings—they change us'

Interior designer Lisa Staprans's debut book "Soul of Design, A Transformative Exploration of Home and Wellness", invites readers on a journey to rediscover the essence of home as the sanctuary of the soul and shares evidence of the profound connection between design, spirituality, and well-being. Renowned as an interior designer and as a one of the leading spokespersons on neuro-aesthetics, and neurosciences, Lisa is a sought out expert in the field. We caught up with the author, who has dared to delve into, as she explains, the deeper questions about what design is truly capable of.

Lisa Staprans.

What inspired you to write The Soul of Design and explore the connection between home and wellness? Could you share a bit about your career before the book?
'I've been an interior designer for over 30 years, and the seed for The Soul of Design was planted over 20 years ago when I gave a TED Talk in Jaipur, India, titled "The Soul of Design." That talk became the inspiration for this book, a journey I've been carrying with me for over 27 years. Beauty, in many ways, saved my life. I believe that intentional spaces infused with beauty and purpose don't just change our surroundings—they change us, making us healthier and happier.'

How do neuro-aesthetics influence modern interior design?
'Neuro-aesthetics have a profound impact on modern interior design. We live in a world that's often cluttered with meaningless stuff, but our brains and bodies crave items that are thoughtfully made and bring joy. In design, "less is more" is not just a concept; it's a way to connect deeply with our surroundings. By choosing things that hold meaning and are created with positive intent, we create spaces that resonate with our very core. This is essential for the future of design and for nurturing our well-being and our planet.'

What simple changes can people make to their homes to improve well-being?
'Take a step back and really think about the things you own. How do they make you feel? If something doesn't bring you peace or happiness, consider letting it go—maybe pass it on to someone else. Bring in a piece of nature, display something that brings joy or holds a happy memory. Our homes are sanctuaries; fill them with colours and elements that lift you up. Sometimes, even a simple throw, a beautiful branch, or a calming view of nature can make all the difference.'

Can you share a project where you applied the principles of The Soul of Design?
'Absolutely—I always try to apply these principles. The Hillside Sanctuary project, featured in my book and on my website, is one example. My Embedded Intentions project is another. In my San Francisco Showcase Room, I wrote my intentions directly on the walls before adding wallpaper and even included a bamboo wall blessed by a monk in Thailand. In my Menlo Park project, my clients wrote their dreams and intentions on the walls before we plastered over them, embedding their hopes within their home.'

What challenges do designers face in today's market?
'One of the biggest challenges is the overwhelming influence of social media and the "black hole" of constant marketing. It can be distracting and lead to excess. Sometimes the best thing to do is to turn it off, step back, and focus on what truly matters.'

How do you hope your book will impact the design industry?
'My hope is that The Soul of Design will inspire a deeper connection to beauty and soul in our lives. I want people to feel this depth, to choose more consciously, and to see how design can be both intentional and healing.

It's truly an honour to share my thoughts on how beauty can be transformative and healing. Together, we all have the power to make the world a bit better, one beautiful, soulful choice at a time.'
