As the pre-Christmas season begins, consumer sentiment has shown a slight uptick, according to the latest consumption barometer from the German Trade Association (HDE). However, it remains to be seen in the coming months if this marks the start of a positive trend. Significant boosts in private consumption for the economy are not expected for the remainder of the year.

After several months of declining consumer confidence, a glimmer of optimism has emerged. The consumer mood has improved slightly in November, partially offsetting the downturn experienced since summer. The barometer is currently in a better position compared to the same time last year.
Whether this improvement signals the beginning of a recovery is still uncertain. However, the trajectory of consumer sentiment for the coming weeks appears cautiously optimistic. The willingness to make purchases continues to rise in November, reflecting a decrease in consumption reluctance. Additionally, consumers are showing a tendency to reduce their savings efforts, indicating a willingness to spend. There is also a renewed sense of optimism regarding income expectations, with many anticipating an improvement in their financial situation that could support consumption.
The HDE Consumer Barometer is published on the first Monday of each month and is based on a survey of 1,600 individuals regarding their purchasing intentions, savings behavior, financial status, and other consumption-related factors. It serves as an indicator of expected consumer sentiment over the next three months rather than reflecting current consumer behavior.
