Organized by the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA), top bathroom brands gathered at Windsor Castle on November 1 to make a historic pledge to reduce water waste and combat infection risks globally. Industry leaders committed to innovating with water-efficient products, such as low-flow toilets and touchless technology, to improve hygiene and address water scarcity. Their efforts aim to position bathroom products as central to health and environmental protection.

These commitments target billions of litres in water savings from leaky toilets, taps, and showers worldwide, addressing both waste and the potential spread of harmful bacteria like C. diff and E. coli. In the UK alone, up to 400 million litres of water are wasted daily from leaky toilets, totalling 1.46 billion litres annually. Simple changes, such as switching to lower-flow showers, could cut water use by up to 60%.
The world's top ten bathroom companies, including Kohler, Hansgrohe SE, and Roca Group, discussed these issues and signed the declaration during a two-day summit. Executives committed to investing in research and developing products to enhance water efficiency and hygiene, along with clear labelling to help consumers make environmentally friendly choices. The pledge includes innovations to reduce infection risks, improve hand hygiene, and advance anti-microbial surfaces and flushing systems.
Tom Reynolds, CEO of BMA, emphasized that water preservation and combating antimicrobial resistance are crucial to public health. He highlighted that the bathroom industry's pledge to address these issues marks a significant step toward a safer, more sustainable future.
