Sainsbury reports decrease in sales of Habitat, but the home brand is gaining in market share

Sainsbury's group has recently released its latest financial results, reporting a 5.3% increase in total sales, reaching £31.4 billion, up from £29.8 billion in the previous year. The main homewares and furnishings brand within the Sainsbury's group, Habitat, is part of the Sainsbury's Argos business. Argos sales grew slightly by 0.1%, driven by a strong 9.3% growth in the fourth quarter, while general merchandise sales, which include Habitat, declined by 0.4% to £6 billion.

Despite a weak market, Sainsbury's reported that it had gained market share in the general merchandise sector, with Habitat performing well, particularly in bedding and home décor. The brand launched several new collaborations with third-party designers, such as Sanderson Design Group, and introduced a summer range with Kew Botanical Gardens, contributing to its market share gains in homeware.

Sainsbury's CEO Simon Roberts highlighted the company's focus on value to combat inflation and improve customer experience. Our brilliant colleagues and suppliers are at the heart of everything we do, and I want to thank them for all their hard work as we set ourselves up to deliver a fantastic Christmas for our customers. As we head into the festive season, there is real energy and excitement at Sainsbury's and Argos, and we're expecting another strong performance.'
