The trade policy environment for German companies is becoming more complex following the election results in the USA. Gero Furchheim, President of the German Association bevh, calls on Europe to position itself in a united manner and with clear guidelines: 'The importance of the globalised trade order as we knew it in the past and as it made Germany strong will continue to decline after the election results.'

He continues: 'The only question is how radically and quickly the upheaval will continue. However, a clear foreign trade strategy as to how Germany and Europe want to position themselves in this new order is still lacking. Europe must never allow the new rules of trade to be determined by others alone. It must determine its own guidelines, which counter nationalist solo efforts with a positive order and preserve openness as the basis for our prosperity. Where something bothers us, we must be prepared to act together in Europe. This applies to our challengers and allies. But the result must never be a world of mutual isolation and threats. Extreme, one-dimensional explanatory models in trade policy do not do justice to the complexity of our world and will fail.'
