A recent study by Observador Cetelem, a commercial brand of BNP Paribas Personal Finance, reveals that most Portuguese are dissatisfied with their housing conditions, with only 29% fully satisfied with their current living situation. The research, focused on energy renovation and housing satisfaction, highlights key areas of dissatisfaction, particularly the cost of housing and related expenses. Only 17% of respondents are happy with the additional housing costs, including energy performance and heating methods. Similarly, just 30% are satisfied with housing prices.

The study also shows significant differences between homeowners and tenants. While 85% of homeowners feel they can manage their housing costs, only a third of tenants say the same. Many tenants express dissatisfaction with the state of their homes and the inability to make changes to improve energy efficiency or customize the space to their needs. Around 40% of tenants are unhappy with not being able to carry out renovations.
As a result, nearly 50% of renters say they plan to move, compared to only 17% of homeowners, many of whom see their property as a long-term investment. Price remains the primary consideration for most people when choosing a home, followed by location, size, and potential energy costs.
The findings are part of a broader European trend, with housing satisfaction issues common across countries like Spain, France, and Germany. In fact, 35% of Europeans surveyed reported difficulties managing family expenses, reflecting the ongoing housing challenges many are facing across the continent.
