Many Swedish retail workers below the poverty line

As the wage negotiations get underway, the Swedish Trade Union LO, particularly its sector Handels, is focusing on part-time work in retail, which causes many employees to fall below the poverty line.

According to a report by Handels, retail workers live in economic vulnerability. Part-time work in stores has long been a point of contention for Handels. A recent report on actual wages reveals that the average salary for a retail employee is SEK 16,200 after tax, according to the union's calculations. Of these, seven out of ten work part-time, meaning that three out of ten earn wages below the so-called poverty line.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by retail workers, particularly those in part-time positions, who struggle with low pay and economic insecurity. The union is emphasising the need for better wages and working conditions in the upcoming negotiations to address this disparity.
