Illulian, the Milanese luxury textiles brand, has introduced two new rugs designed by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa: Stone and Maru.
The design philosophy behind both is intentionally simple, staying true to Fukasawa's approach of creating objects that are nearly imperceptible, blending seamlessly into their surroundings. The colour palette is soft and delicate, with warm beige tones that possess timeless appeal. Both rugs are characterized by their understated design, emphasizing their relationship with the surrounding environment to create a harmonious blend with any interior.
Maru Rug
Maru translates to 'circle' in Japanese, and the circle is the central motif of this rug. The designer explores the decomposition of the perfect circle, a figure that often appears overly pure and perfect—something humans naturally find difficult to comprehend. Through the juxtaposition of these fragmented forms, the rug creates an illusion of rotational movement. The result is an ordered pattern of archetypal shapes, with beige hues that evoke a sense of warm minimalism.
Stone Rug
Stone takes inspiration from the irregular arrangement of stones. The design reflects the way stones are laid out, either randomly stacked or carefully placed side by side, emphasizing the hands-on craftsmanship behind it. Stone, a resilient material, is worked twice: first by the craftsman and later by the passage of time and its interaction with the environment. This concept influenced the design of Stone, which features irregular geometries and soft colours contrasted by darker joints, mimicking the appearance of a paved road.
A key concept for Naoto Fukasawa is interaction, which plays a central role in this design. The linear elements in Stone are intentional, offering a process of aesthetic decompression that resonates with the fast-paced nature of contemporary life.
