Glassblowing in Venice is an ancient craft. The first records of Venetian master glassblowers date back to the 14th century, following trade contacts with Syria, where glass culture was already well established.
With the decline of glassmaking in the Islamic world in the following century, Venice took over the scene, gradually refining techniques and developing processes to produce crystal-clear, transparent, and ultrapure glass. The main technique remains, even today, that of glass-blowing. Using a long reed called a 'blow pipe,' the master glassmaker blows into the pipe to shape a molten lump of glass, or bolo, which expands with the blow and takes on the desired form.
Reviving glass-blowing traditions
Siru embraced this ancient tradition in 1988, founding the company in the heart of the Venice Lido to create lamps in blown glass and metal cages according to classical craftsmanship standards. Over the years, Siru has distinguished itself in the world of lighting, thanks to the technical and artistic experience of founder Rudy Marinotto and collaborations with prominent designers and studios. Known for its production flexibility and ability to interpret designs, Siru produces a range of models—from catalogue standards to custom designer commissions—making it an ideal partner for design studios and the custom market.
Craftsmanship and attention to detail are fundamental to Siru's approach to projects and commissions, including those of significant design interest. The use of high-quality raw materials is key to producing premium glass, where colours are created by adding minerals to the molten sand.
