More permitted commercial buildings
Total permitted construction increased by 485,000 m² in the third quarter, with a significant portion of this rise coming from commercial buildings. These grew to 925,000 m² from 554,000 m² in the second quarter, a 67% increase, accounting for three-quarters of the overall rise. During the same period, other buildings saw a 5% increase, while residential buildings rose by 15%.

The composition of residential buildings has notably changed when looking at the number of housing units. In the third quarter of 2024, 3,466 apartments were permitted in multi-story buildings, representing 56% of the 6,153 total homes permitted in that quarter. In comparison, only 2,703 apartments in multi-story buildings were permitted in the second quarter of 2024, making up 42% of the 6,403 total homes allowed in that quarter. While the area of permitted residential buildings increased, the number of housing units decreased in the third quarter, indicating that the average size of the permitted homes grew.
