Californian-based lighting retailer to pay $4.1 million to settle lawsuit

A Californian-based retailer of lighting and furniture, has agreed to pay $4.1 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of deceptive advertising and unfair competition.

The retailer, Lamps Plus, misrepresented its price match and 120% price guarantee policies by not disclosing exclusions for its own-brand products. It also used misleading 'compare at' and 'strike-through' prices to create the illusion of discounts, even when no competitor products existed or the referenced prices were not actual.

The settlement includes civil penalties and investigative costs, and bars the company from using misleading pricing tactics. Lamps Plus did not admit wrongdoing but cooperated with the investigation.
