Designer Eero Aarnio talks to Magis:

'I've always thought that a seat does not necessarily have to be a chair'

Eero Aarnio is a renowned figure in Finnish design, celebrated for his talents in furniture, architecture, and graphic design. From the start, he demonstrated skill in drawing and an innate ability to understand form. Italian brand Magis talks to the designer. 'A new idea can come in about 15 seconds. That's when you need to pick up a pencil and let it flow on paper without trying to rationalise. When a pencil moves in a relaxed manner, it creates the right kind of line,' he says.

For Aarnio, there's a seamless connection between design and nature, with inspiration coming from anything and everything. His keen observation of the natural world has led to a collaboration with Magis, producing playful and imaginative creations. The Happy Bird, Pingy, and Puppy, part of the Magis Me Too collection, are stylized animal forms with timeless appeal.

Functioning as toys, seating, and decorative elements, they invite both children and adults to engage with them. The Trioli chair, which earned the prestigious ADI Compasso d'Oro award in 2008, also belongs to this collection. Designed for children, it offers two seating heights depending on its orientation and doubles as a rocking horse when flipped onto its front.

These designs reflect Aarnio's deep exploration of sitting ergonomics. 'I've always thought that a seat does not necessarily have to be a chair. It can be any type of volume, even a rock, as long as it has logical proportions' he says.
