Shaping Ukraine’s export future: furniture manufacturers address challenges

On November 18, key stakeholders from across Ukraine's economic landscape convened to discuss the nation's Export White Paper—a strategic document aimed at shaping the country's future export strategy. The discussion included representatives from industries such as IT, agriculture, food production, and the Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers (UAFM).

The full-scale invasion by Russia has fundamentally reshaped Ukraine's international trade dynamics. Key challenges include power supply disruptions affecting manufacturing and production capabilities, destroyed logistics routes, and a heavy reliance on raw material exports, which has reduced trade diversification and increased dependence on a few key markets.

For the furniture industry, specific challenges include the looming expiration of the moratorium on timber exports in 2027 and the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Without clear regulations, Ukrainian furniture manufacturers risk losing their competitive edge in global markets.

Speaking at the event, UAFM Board Member Oksana Donska emphasised the need to enhance innovation and processing capabilities in Ukrainian exports. However, achieving this requires a stronger focus on education, particularly in engineering disciplines. To ensure the furniture sector thrives post-moratorium, Donska stressed the importance of enacting the Law on the Timber Market to safeguard the industry. Additionally, government support is needed to promote Ukrainian products in global markets. Citing examples from Poland and Turkey, Donska pointed to effective subsidy models where up to 90% of costs for participating in international trade shows are covered if companies adhere to a three-year event calendar.

The Export White Paper is a call to action for the government, businesses, and experts to align efforts and create a cohesive export strategy. It lays the groundwork for Ukraine's transition from a raw material exporter to a nation known for innovation, quality, and high-value products.
