Interview with Antonia Caicedo, Design Director and VP at JIMECO

'The luxury market has proven time and again to be firmly resilient in the face of trying times'

With roots that trace back to 1975, JIMECO has become synonymous with bespoke craftsmanship, elegant finishes, and timeless design. From its origins as a family-run atelier, the brand works alongside some of the most talented architects and designers across the United States, Great Britain, and Europe. We talk with Antonia Caicedo, Design Director and Vice President at JIMECO, who shares more about her luxury furniture and lighting collection, Antonia Collection, recently launched at High Point Market.

Can you tell us more about the history of JIMECO and how it was founded?
'Drawing upon a unique legacy, JIMECO is a family tradition of bespoke, elegant finishes, joinery, and furniture showcased in the finest interiors worldwide since 1975. JIMECO works with the most talented interior designers and architects from the United States, Great Britain and Europe and has crafted timeless pieces that set the bar for the future of design, making JIMECO a true Atelier in the interior design world.

Our unique finishes are all handcrafted by a team of professional artists, some with over half a century of experience and tradition, making them standard-bearers for some of the industry's most groundbreaking craftsmanship. Two generations continue to safeguard our tradition and benchmark standards as a family company, always looking towards the future while never forgetting its roots.'

In what markets is the brand most active?
'The US market is our largest market right now without a doubt, territories like Florida, Texas, California, and New York are the best performing without question. Europe has been historically a very important market for us as well, especially during the 1990s and early 2000s, markets like Greece and Germany were great territories for us. Things have shifted a little bit since the financial crisis, giving centre stage to markets like the UK and France, which both are quite representative for us.'

How is the market right now?
'While economic challenges do exist within the industry overall, our clientele is focused specifically on the luxury market, which has proven time and again to be firmly resilient in the face of trying times. We are selling an experience rather than just a piece of furniture, we are primarily focused on providing our clients with designs that have true added value, turning price into a non-decisive factor for purchasing.'

You were at High Point Market. How was the fair?
'As it has always been, the market was a truly beautiful display of artistic vision for the Antonia Collection, but due to the recent hurricane that tore through North Carolina, the market had a notably different feel. However, this feeling was met with a strong sense of unification among the vendors and designers at market, and the resulting strength was tangible. It was an opportunity to shine without a doubt, with innovative product introductions, thoughtful and beautiful events and a display of resiliency and strength.'

What did you show there?
'We announced two new collections at Fall High Point Market:

The Antonia Collection: Twelve new pieces providing strategic enhancement to a collection that marries Art Deco and Mid-Century modern styles, and is known for its sleek geometrical forms, light feminine edges, and clean intersection of volumes and finishes.

The Antonia Straight Collection, a collaboration with Fine Art Handcrafted Lighting: This new collection uses time-honoured techniques passed down through generations, as well as materials like solid optic crystal, parchment goatskin, and metals. Skilled artisans apply hand-finished techniques to create stunning pendants and sconces with single linear cylinders.'

What are the future plans for the company?
'We are always looking for innovation. New designs, finishes, and collaborations are currently in the works. Stay tuned!'
