Atelier Robotiq recreates timeless Japanese lanterns with a Dutch twist blending art

Atelier Robotiq, a Rotterdam (The Netherlands)-based design studio founded by Søren Blomaard and Anne-Lise Heydra, has reimagined the art of lighting design by merging traditional craftsmanship with modern robotics. Their innovative approach was showcased at the Forms Unfolding exhibition during Dutch Design Week 2024, held from October 19 to 27 in Eindhoven. The Sway and Tilt lamps, their latest creations, exemplify this unique blend of practices and technologies, echoing the studio's commitment to creating striking and functional pieces.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese lanterns, the studio explored how materials such as washi paper could create intricate shadow play when woven together. This exploration led to the discovery of cotton tape, chosen for its perfect translucency, allowing for soft, diffused lighting. To scale this delicate technique while maintaining precision, Atelier Robotiq developed a robotic weaving method capable of replicating handwoven patterns with exceptional accuracy. This advancement has resulted in lamps that emit a gentle glow and capture the essence of traditional Japanese design.

'The warm, diffused light and playful overlapping tape patterns in our latest designs reflect our ongoing exploration of the intersection between art and engineering,' noted Anne-Lise Heydra. The Tilt lamp features a woven shade that gently tilts when touched, altering the light's direction and flow. Its minimalist cylindrical base balances elegance with functionality. The Sway lamp, inspired by the organic movement of swaying grass, gently moves when touched or stirred by air, creating a dynamic, serene lighting effect. The stone base evokes natural materials like riverbeds, adding to the sense of fluid motion.

Atelier Robotiq's work emphasises that technology should not supplant traditional methods, but rather enhance and preserve them. In an age of rapid production and hyper-consumption, their designs remind us of the value of time and craftsmanship. These lamps are not just objects but enduring pieces that embody the philosophy that true design lies in creating items with lasting beauty and function. By fusing the old with the new, Atelier Robotiq exemplifies how thoughtful design can foster a deeper connection between art, engineering, and the environment.
