IKEA Canada has announced an investment of over $300,000 over three years in Furniture Bank, a social enterprise based in Toronto tackling furniture poverty across the nation. This expansion follows a successful partnership in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and marks a move towards a nationwide strategy to support communities and enhance sustainability.

The partnership between IKEA Canada and Furniture Bank has already made a significant impact. Through their combined efforts, more than 25,000 returned mattresses and 10,000 additional household items have been diverted from landfills and repurposed, benefiting over 11,680 individuals and families. This initiative has provided an in-kind value of approximately $4 million and prevented an estimated 1,734 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to driving over 7 million kilometres in an average car.
'Our Life at Home Report shows that many Canadians struggle to achieve quality sleep, which has a direct effect on health and wellbeing,' said Selwyn Crittendon, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA Canada. 'The donation of mattresses goes beyond just comfort; it offers a pathway to a better future. This collaboration exemplifies how we can create social impact while advancing our national sustainability objectives.'
Furniture Bank's innovative model also supports other nonprofits to replicate its approach through its startup incubator. This includes access to digital marketing tools, call centres, and logistics infrastructure. IKEA Canada's investment will help expand the model into new locations such as Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, and Winnipeg, with further plans to reach other communities where IKEA has a presence.
Dan Kershaw, Executive Director of Furniture Bank, highlighted the unique nature of the collaboration: 'While other retailers may prioritise product destruction or work with liquidators, IKEA Canada embodies its commitments. This funding allows us to expand our proven model and work towards a more sustainable future.'
Earlier this year, IKEA Canada pledged an additional $120,000 to Furniture Bank's Sleep Well initiative. This programme provides essential sleep equipment to children, ensuring families have access to complete bed kits and other items that promote better rest and overall health.
IKEA Canada's dedication to sustainability is embedded within its core operations and aligns with its global IKEA People & Planet Positive 2030 strategy. The company aims to inspire sustainable living through energy efficiency, waste reduction, and promoting responsible consumption. This commitment, along with its focus on social equity and circular practices, has earned IKEA Canada the title of one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 16 consecutive years.
