Steve Symons and Christophe Scheyvaerts launch MAZU

'It's about being the first, the one who sets trends rather than follows them'

A new brand has emerged in the Antwerp region: MAZU. This new and ambitious company is the brainchild of two creative visionaries: Steve Symons, known for BUZZISPACE, and Christophe Scheyvaerts, the driving force behind PAJUDesign. Together, they have developed an innovative product that combines exclusive high-end aluminium planters with premium LED lighting.

'Being the first'
The name MAZU literally translates to "being the first", reflecting the company's ambition to lead the way in designing sustainable and aesthetic solutions for lighting and decoration. MAZU's aluminium planters are finished with eco-friendly powder coatings from Sherwin Williams, ensuring durability and a long-lasting quality.

"Steve Symons sold his successful company BUZZISPACE and began looking for new opportunities," Christophe Scheyvaerts says. "Too driven to stop, he decided to use his network to support a young entrepreneur. That's how his interest in co-acquiring PAJU began. Unfortunately, just a few months earlier, PAJU had been sold, which was naturally a disappointment. However, it strengthened our bond and sparked the idea that we had to create something together. And so, one thing led to another."

The integrated LED lighting is designed to illuminate plants or trees from below, creating a warm ambiance during long summer evenings and cosy winter nights. The lighting can easily be plugged into an outdoor socket or existing garden lighting systems.

Sustainability and design
Sustainability lies at the heart of MAZU's ethos. By using environmentally friendly materials and focusing on long-lasting quality, MAZU demonstrates that sustainability is not a passing trend but an absolute priority. The product designs cater to the demands of modern architecture and landscaping, making MAZU a compelling choice for the contract market, hospitality, and gardens designed by architects.

B2B and exclusive partnerships
MAZU primarily targets the B2B market, focusing on bespoke solutions for businesses, hotels, and exclusive gardens. While its emphasis is on the professional sector, the brand remains accessible through specialised channels and partners.

"We have high expectations, especially since Steve views this as his final major life project, and Christophe has stepped out of his comfort zone to pursue his dream of building his ultimate home in 10 years," the enthusiastic founders share. "Our partnership is highly complementary, particularly in sales, and we share a strong alignment in what we value. While the operational and creative aspects are handled by young talent, the strategic experience and networks lie with the more seasoned team members. If we stay true to this approach, we believe MAZU can evolve into a global brand within a few years."

"We remain cautious with our statements, but we dare to say that it would be a success if the name MAZU becomes as well-recognised in the high-end segment as our respected peers at Atelier Vierkant. We aim to achieve this by merging contemporary technological innovations with exquisite decorative design. To clarify, we mention Atelier Vierkant out of deep respect for the brand."

Official launch
MAZU has been officially established and will make its grand debut at Maison&Objet in Paris in January 2025. Additionally, the company will open a showroom at Schijnpoortweg 123 in Antwerp, made possible in collaboration with Gommaire.
