Timber harvesting maintains high levels in Denmark

Timber harvesting in Danish forests has remained at elevated levels in recent years, with 2023 seeing a 2.5% increase from the previous year. The total volume of wood harvested reached 5.1 million cubic metres, marking the highest figure ever recorded. Compared to a decade ago, timber felling has risen by 41%, driven by the growing demand for firewood and energy wood, while the volume of useful timber has decreased by 6%.

State forests account for 12% of the total timber harvested. Although the state has consistently been a key contributor since 2017, its share has declined from 18% due to the rise in overall felling.

The forestry industry remains relatively small in Denmark, employing around 5,000 people, two-thirds of whom are wage earners. Over the past two decades, employment in the sector has gradually increased.
