Furniture legacy moves forward after factory fire

Following a catastrophic fire at Getama earlier this year, the future of production for some of Denmark's most iconic furniture designs has now been determined. Mogens Koch Design, known for its classic bookcase series first produced in 1932, will move its manufacturing operations to Fredericia Furniture.

The fire on 9 February destroyed Getama's production hall and administration building, leaving uncertainty around the company's ability to rebuild. Despite plans for reconstruction, Getama has decided to discontinue production of Mogens Koch's designs at the turn of the year. Mogens S. Koch, son of the late designer and representative of Mogens Koch Design, confirmed the move, explaining that the fire prompted the decision. He expressed confidence in the new partnership, stating that Fredericia Furniture was a natural choice given their longstanding relationship and expertise.

Fredericia Furniture will take over the production of Mogens Koch's collection, including the iconic shelving system, beginning in January 2025. Production will be split between Fredericia's factory in Svendborg and an expanded collaboration with Snedkergården in Them. Employees with experience crafting Mogens Koch's products will transition to the new production facilities, ensuring continuity and quality. Mogens S. Koch emphasised that it was a firm condition for the family that skilled staff be retained and that production remain in Denmark.

Getama, established in Gedsted in 1899, has long been synonymous with Danish design excellence, notably producing Hans J. Wegner's iconic chairs since the 1950s. Mogens Koch Design became part of its production in 2021, but the devastating fire disrupted this partnership. While rumours circulate about Getama's future, the company has yet to announce official plans regarding the reconstruction of its factory.

Rasmus Graversen, CEO of Fredericia Furniture, expressed pride in continuing Mogens Koch's legacy. He noted that Koch's focus on craftsmanship and quality aligns perfectly with Fredericia's own heritage, which includes collaborations with design legend Børge Mogensen, Koch's former colleague and friend. Graversen highlighted the significance of preserving Danish design traditions while ensuring production stays within the country.

Mogens Koch's celebrated collection will be available through Fredericia Furniture in spring 2025, marking a new chapter for these timeless designs. While Getama rebuilds its future, this partnership ensures that a cornerstone of Danish design will continue to thrive, honouring both heritage and craftsmanship.
