The German mattress industry is taking a significant step forward with the launch of Matratzenrecycling Deutschland (MRD), a new initiative that sets the standard for sustainability and extended producer responsibility (EPR) within the sector. Established by leading companies, including Aquinos Bedding, Auping, Bettwaren Stendebach, Euro Comfort Group, fan frankenstolz, Hilding Anders, Novaya Belgium, Rummel Matratzen, Tempur Sealy, and Erich Werkmeister, the initiative represents a collective commitment to addressing environmental challenges.

The newly formed association is led by industry experts Dirk Olefs (Auping Germany) as chairman, with Markus Stendebach (Bettwaren Stendebach) as deputy chairman and Carl Christoph Held (fan frankenstolz) on the board. Their combined leadership underscores the sector's determination to tackle the slow progress of environmental policies with proactive measures that make a tangible impact.
According to Martin Auerbach, Managing Director of the Mattress Association, the time for passive discussions has passed. 'We no longer want to wait for political guidelines, but rather act ourselves,' he stated, reinforcing the industry's resolve to take matters into its own hands. This bold approach is a response to the sluggish pace of political initiatives, particularly following the adoption of the National Circular Economy Strategy. With Germany's federal election approaching in 2025, expectations for significant legislative action on recycling remain low, making industry-led solutions all the more critical.
The MRD initiative is a clear signal that the mattress sector is ready to lead by example, going beyond mere pledges and embracing practical, results-driven action. By implementing concrete measures for recycling and sustainable practices, the association aims to set a precedent for other industries to follow. It represents a shift towards accountability, innovation and environmental stewardship, ensuring that the industry does not simply rely on political direction but actively contributes to a greener future.
The launch of MRD marks a decisive moment for the mattress industry in Germany. By establishing a robust framework for recycling and circular economy practices, the sector is laying the groundwork for long-term environmental progress. This commitment not only highlights the industry's responsibility but also reflects a broader ambition to drive sustainable change, proving that practical solutions are possible when businesses take the lead.
