Leaving behind DKK 20 million in debt

Danish family launches new furniture business after bankruptcy

A prominent Danish furniture retailer declared bankruptcy in early October, leaving behind debts exceeding DKK 20 million. Within a month of the closure, a new furniture business was established, prompting questions about its links to the previous company.

Bolighuset Werenberg went bankrupt at the beginning of October. The newly launched webshop is owned by the wife of the former company's proprietor, who previously co-managed the business with her father. This development follows accusations of undelivered orders and financial mismanagement from disgruntled customers. The new venture promotes itself as a brand specialising in handmade, high-quality furniture designed for comfort and aesthetic appeal. The products include sofas, shelves, and tables.

The collapse of the family-run business marked the end of a 60-year history. Founded in 1964, it was taken over by the second generation in 2005. Financial troubles, however, began surfacing earlier this year when reports revealed an annual deficit exceeding DKK 18 million. By spring, concerns about the company's stability intensified as both its physical store and webshop closed temporarily.

The former owner attributed the bankruptcy to economic pressures and a failed digital transformation strategy. He acknowledged efforts to salvage the business but cited continued financial losses as an insurmountable challenge. The closure left many customers without the furniture they had paid for, deepening public frustration.

The new company's establishment by a family member has drawn scrutiny. While ownership has been confirmed, those involved have refrained from addressing media inquiries regarding past allegations or the new enterprise's relationship with its predecessor.
