In 2024, Temu and Shein emerged as the top contenders for the most downloaded free iPhone apps in the UK, according to data from the Apple Store. Temu claimed the number one spot in the UK, while also topping the charts in other major markets such as the US, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Australia, South Korea, and Mexico.
In countries like Italy, France, and Japan, however, Temu secured the second position in terms of downloads. Launched in the UK last year, Temu initially began operations in the US in September 2022. The platform has since expanded to over 80 international markets, operating as a direct factory platform that connects consumers with manufacturers.

Shein, followed Temu closely. While Temu led the downloads, Shein held strong in the UK and maintained its position as a dominant player in other regions. Apple's annual ranking also identified Block Blast! as the top downloaded free game app on the iPhone, with shopping apps capturing the second spot in popularity. Vinted, the second-hand marketplace, ranked fourth overall, closely trailing Meta's Threads. The AI chatbot app ChatGPT secured the fifth spot, followed by TikTok, Tesco's app, WhatsApp, Google, and Microsoft Authenticator.
