SaloneSatellite, the platform dedicated to nurturing emerging designers, celebrates its 25th anniversary with the release of a comprehensive book titled "Universo Satellite. 25 anni di / years of SaloneSatellite". Published by Corraini, edited by Beppe Finessi, and designed by studio òbelo, this 752-page volume captures the rich history and contributions of the event that has become a cornerstone of the global design landscape.
Spanning from its inception in 1998 to the present, the book provides over 1,200 images, personal accounts, and previously unpublished documents, shedding light on the unique evolution of SaloneSatellite. Marva Griffin Wilshire, the visionary behind the project, reflects on its origins, stating: 'In the autumn of 1997, Cosmit asked me to bring the new designers who had long aspired to be part of the Salone del Mobile "inside". The request from Manlio Armellini, Cosmit's CEO, was clear: 'Marva, we have the space, see what you can do to bring young people inside the Salone del Mobile.'
Griffin Wilshire, after consulting with designers and architects, recognised the potential for a dynamic platform that could foster dialogue between emerging creatives and industry leaders. Her project, which debuted three days later, marked the beginning of a transformational space within the Salone del Mobile, dedicated to young designers. Over time, SaloneSatellite evolved into more than just a display of new designs. It became a space where young talents could gain exposure, collaborate, and contribute to the ever-expanding narrative of contemporary design.
Maria Porro, President of Salone del Mobile.Milano, reflects on the enduring significance of SaloneSatellite: 'Universo Satellite is a book rather like a magic box, that goes beyond the idea of cataloguing and classification. It is a snapshot of a laboratory projected into the future, of which as a spectator I have never missed an appointment. Thanks to monumental archival work, Universo Satellite is SaloneSatellite telling its story for what it has always been – behind the scenes, in the spotlight: a kaleidoscope of experiences, faces, encounters, projects born from an ever-growing and dialectical network of young creatives, international schools and universities, entrepreneurs, journalists and critics.'
Beppe Finessi, the editor of the volume, emphasises the transformation of SaloneSatellite over the years: 'We have always called it the "Satellite", but over time it has become a true "Universe". Since it opened in 1998, SaloneSatellite has been the place for creativity par excellence. SaloneSatellite is a story built around an unbeatable recipe, orchestrated by an exceptional curator, Marva Griffin Wilshire, who was invited by Manlio Armellini to put together a project to welcome young designers into a space dedicated to them within the pavilions of the Salone del Mobile. Before SaloneSatellite, young people and young designers found it hard to enter into a dialogue with entrepreneurs. With the advent of SaloneSatellite, they have found a place where they can gain experience, to add knowledge to their education.'
The book not only showcases the works displayed over the years but also explores the contexts in which they emerged. It goes beyond simple documentation, acting as a "Wunderkammer" of contemporary design – a treasure trove of insights that capture the broader narrative of creativity and innovation. The contributions of figures such as Paola Antonelli, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, and Nendo highlight the book's depth, offering diverse perspectives on the impact of SaloneSatellite.
In this way, "Universo Satellite" stands as a lasting testament to SaloneSatellite's enduring influence. It reflects on the journey from its origins to its status today as a global hub for emerging design talent, underscoring the event's role in fostering dialogue, collaboration, and the continuous evolution of the design world.
