Must-visit design events to kick off the new year

As the new year approaches, the design world gears up for an exciting calendar of events that showcase creativity, innovation, and industry trends. From international exhibitions to local fairs, January offers a wealth of opportunities for design professionals and enthusiasts to explore the latest in lighting, textiles, antiques, and more.

The Dallas International Lighting Show, known as Lightovation, promises to illuminate the year with cutting-edge designs and innovations. Held from 8 to 11 January, it offers a massive display of indoor, outdoor, and architectural lighting. A preview day on 7 January invites designers to explore upcoming trends through talks and presentations by industry leaders.

Simultaneously, the Dallas Total Home & Gift Market takes place from 8 to 14 January, creating a hub for retailers and manufacturers. This event covers everything from home décor to housewares, offering an ideal setting for sourcing and networking.

Mid-month, the design community turns its attention to Germany, where Heimtextil unfolds in Frankfurt from 14 to 17 January. This global trade fair attracts a diverse audience of designers, architects, and retailers. With over 2,600 exhibitors, it explores the latest in bedding, bath, and home textiles, including a dedicated hall for carpets and rugs.

Atlanta's Winter Market, running from 14 to 20 January, showcases an extensive array of home furnishings, outdoor living products, and gifts. Spanning three buildings, the event provides educational sessions and trend presentations, ensuring attendees leave with both inspiration and practical knowledge.

The streets of Paris come alive from 15 to 18 January with the return of Paris Déco Off. Celebrated for its luxury textiles, the event features over 120 showrooms, offering glimpses into the latest collections in fabric, wall coverings, and trimmings. Visitors can also enjoy the iconic lanterns lighting up the city as part of this unique experience.

Maison&Objet, held from 16 to 20 January in Paris, broadens the horizon by blending home, fashion, and design in one comprehensive fair. Attendees can explore brand launches, workshops, and guided tours across the city, immersing themselves in a creative landscape tailored for design enthusiasts.

London's Decorative Fair follows from 21 to 26 January, drawing collectors, designers, and antique lovers to Battersea Park. The event combines English and European antiques with 20th-century designs, presenting unique finds alongside the London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair.

San Francisco hosts FOG Design + Art from 23 to 26 January, offering a curated selection of international galleries and contemporary design dealers. The event features thought-provoking discussions on topics like neuroaesthetics and connoisseurship, ensuring a blend of inspiration and education.

Toronto's Interior Design Show (IDS) runs concurrently, celebrating Canada's design talent. From product debuts to discussions on luxury hospitality and wellness in design, IDS provides a platform for networking and innovation, further solidifying its place in the industry.

In Texas, the Round Top Winter Show, held on 24 and 25 January, brings thousands of visitors to its vast fairgrounds. With over 11 miles of antiques and fine art, this biannual event is a treasure trove for collectors and decorators alike.

New York's Winter Show, from 24 January to 2 February, continues to be a cornerstone of the design calendar. Showcasing fine and decorative arts, the event at Park Avenue Armory hosts over 70 dealers, alongside engaging talks and panel discussions.

As the month concludes, the Sarasota Antiques Show (25–26 January) and Las Vegas Market (26–30 January) provide additional opportunities to discover unique pieces and network with industry peers. Sarasota offers a curated selection of antiques and jewellery, while Las Vegas boasts thousands of exhibitors across its expansive venue.

Lastly, Palm Beach Design Days (28–31 January) and the Chicago edition of the Architecture & Design Film Festival (29 January–2 February) round out the month. Palm Beach brings together renowned designers for discussions on decorating and hospitality, while Chicago offers films and panels that celebrate architecture and design's influence on society.

From textiles and lighting to antiques and contemporary art, these January events set the stage for a dynamic year in the design industry. Each gathering provides an opportunity to connect, learn, and be inspired, marking the start of 2025 with creativity and innovation.
