Belgian business courts declared 55 bankruptcies in week 1 of 2025

During the first week of 2025, from 30 December to 5 January, the Belgian business courts declared 55 bankruptcies, resulting in 95 job losses. This marks a decrease in both the number of bankruptcies and the associated job losses compared to the previous week.

The statistics, released by Statbel, Belgium's national statistics office, show a typical end-of-year trend where the number of bankruptcies drops significantly. This "calendar effect" is observed annually, as the final weeks of the year tend to see fewer bankruptcies being reported.

The figures for the first week of 2025, based on orders from the business courts, provide a snapshot of the early trends in bankruptcy cases. As with all such interim weekly estimates, the data is useful for tracking the first signs of business health in the new year.

While this week's numbers show a decline, it remains to be seen how the economic climate will affect bankruptcy rates in the months ahead. Statbel's figures offer a timely overview of business closures, shedding light on the ongoing challenges many businesses face in the current economic environment.
